Codsworth is a Mister Handy that was the Sole Survivor's robotic butler before the Great War. He was not granted entry to Vault 111, as claimed by the Vault-tec rep, and was left behind when the war was announced on television. Codsworth is reunited with the Survivor after 210 years of roaming around Sanctuary Hills, still loyal to his master. At first, Codsworth seems cheerful and oblivious to what has happened. However, talking to him reveals that he is actually very depressed about the state of the world, and was deeply affected by his two century isolation. To cope, he pretends that nothing happened. At some point after the bombs fell, Codsworth visited the town of Concord - mentioning that the locals threw rocks at him a few times.

Currently, no information is known about Dogmeat's past and whether or not he had an owner. However, Mama Murphy tells the Sole Survivor the dog's name, suggests that he was traveling with Preston Garvey's group and reveals that Dogmeat was sent out to look for help when they became trapped in Concord, which would imply that he belonged to either Preston Garvey himself, or the minutemen in general. True to this suggestion, if Dogmeat is recruited at Red Rocket, he will try to move toward Concord when standing still, although ultimately where the Sole Survivor goes is up to them and this can be ignored.

Preston Garvey was originally part of the Minutemen under Colonel Hollis. Preston joined the Minutemen at age 17. The date is unknown for Col. Hollis’ call to Quincy but he was requested by Sturges, a Quincy resident, who can now be found in Sanctuary Hills. After hearing one of Mama Murphy’s Visions, which entailed everyone in the town being surrounded and fired upon, Sturges quickly requested the Boston Minutemen. When the Minutemen arrived the did indeed find the “Gunners” a ruthless mercenary organization, just outside of Quincy ready to strike. The gunners were locked in an engagement with the Minutemen and eventually retreated. After this moment the Minutemen helped fortify Quincy but it wouldn't be enough. When they returned they murdered nearly all the civilians, a large chunk of the Minutemen and Col. Hollis.

Danse is a member of the Brotherhood of Steel, an experienced tactician, and a powerful warrior. Danse also lets outsiders join the Brotherhood, if they prove themselves worthy through trials. He grew up in the Capital Wasteland alone, picking and selling scraps. When he was older, he moved to Rivet City and opened a junk stand. There he met a man named Cutler and they became friends. He and Cutler were then recruited by the Brotherhood of Steel during one of their recruiting runs as both men felt like it was "the best way out of our nowhere lives". About a year after being posted to the Prydwen, Cutler disappeared on a scouting operation. Danse persuaded his CO to assemble a squad and let him search for Cutler. After about three weeks, Cutler's team was tracked down to a super mutant hive. The super mutants had killed all of Cutler's team save for Cutler himself. They then proceeded to use the Forced Evolutionary Virus to turn Cutler into a super mutant, who was then killed by Danse.

A usual-looking super mutant, Strong seeks to find the "milk of human kindness". This is a line from the play Macbeth (Act 1:Scene 5), cited to him by Rex Goodman while trying to teach the super mutants about William Shakespeare's plays. Strong seems to have taken this metaphor a bit more literally and believes that if he can find the milk and drink it, it will gift super mutants the strength that have made humans successful. Strong is proficient with big weapons, like the missile launcher.
